TRIALS Workshops

Training Initiative for Asian Law and Society Scholars

Hosted by Centre for Asian Legal Studies, Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore

TRIALS Directors: Lynette J. Chua and David M. Engel

With a major grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS Law), is pleased to invite applications for either of two workshops to train law and society scholars who conduct research in Asia.  TRIALS (Training Initiative for Asian Law and Society Scholars) workshops will feature a four-day introduction to the theories and literatures of law and society, individual mentoring by leading law and society scholars from around the world, and discussion of research methodologies, scholarly writing, preparation of manuscripts for publication, and career planning. Applications are welcomed from advanced graduate students and junior faculty members from any country or program in the world.

At this time, CALS invites applications for either of the first two workshops, to be conducted at NUS on 9-12 December 2019 (Workshop 1) and 29 June-2 July 2020 (Workshop 2). Up to 10 participants will be selected for each workshop.  TRIALS will provide accommodations and meals for all participants during the four-day event.  Participants are expected to provide their own transportation to the workshops, but TRIALS has limited funds available to help with travel costs for some participants who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Applicants are expected to submit a personal statement, a CV, a manuscript work-in-progress of an article or chapter, and a letter of recommendation.  Please note that applicants must specify a preference for either Workshop 1 or Workshop 2, or indicate their willingness to be assigned to either workshop.

The deadline for applications is 20 June 2019.
